HOT TOPICS FOR THE MATURING WORKPLACE
RETURN OF THE BOOMERS
− our second book in the planned Boomer Trilogy − is here! Take a few minutes to read a little about the genesis of the book as well as to review a short synopsis that offers you a glimpse inside the book.
This is the question we posed ourselves before entertaining even the thought of beginning to write our second book:
How many minutes 'til midnight are there left before the end of the American Dream of an ever better life in an economically robust American society?
Then, inevitably, additional questions, linked to our area of expertise, presented themselves to us:
- Will the American Dream stand up to the effects of the largest numbers of skilled older workers potentially leaving the workforce in U.S. history, taking with them a treasure chest of intellectual capital?
- What does the future hold with fewer and lesser skilled employees entering the workforce, significantly changing consumption patterns, massively unfunded U.S. Government liabilities, staggering public and personal debt and soaring health care costs?
- Why write a book that explores the roles of the new leaders and the relationship between an ominous future and the role of the aging workforce in the new century?
- How can we help our readers to see both the need and the benefits of engaging a willing workforce of experienced Americans in the quest for the future?
All of our questions led us to the compelling reason to write the book and to make the case that the actions we must take involve utilizing the established talent of our oldest workers in order to buy the time to prepare our youngest workers for global competition in our developed nation.
Synopsis
In Return of the Boomers, you will experience a passionately serious yet entertaining journey to the center of the early 21st century economic and organizational landscape.
The journey to the future begins as our co-authors immerse you in a non-partisan, fact-based look at the challenge of government with a particular focus on the implications of future funding of major entitlement programs (such as Social Security and Medicare) and the potential crushing weight of the Federal deficit.
Then, as you take a second step with our co-authors into the future, you will see how the spending patterns for older Americans begin to go from the consumption of Rolexes to Rolaids and the negative impact of this shift on governmental tax revenues and the challenge to corporate offerings and earnings.
Early on, our authors make the hard case that keeping as many experienced and skilled workers as possible is critical to their and our personal and corporate prosperity.
As the journey together continues, Return of the Boomers transforms from a "what is" happening template that has caused this massive structural change to a "how to" template designed to help our leaders lead others out of the familiar sunlit past into the dawn of the future. Specifically, this book looks at the incredible benefits associated with engaging or employing mature workers to provide a balanced workforce that can concentrate on building a productive bridge to the future of America itself.
Because mature workers are estimated to hold about 70% of the knowledge in today's organizations; are renowned for inventiveness; possess an ethic of heads' down hard work; dependability; and an educational track record of learning and of applying new ways of doing things, we are confident that readers will quickly grasp how their organizations can best tap into new sources and new ideas for recruiting redeveloping and retaining this incredible pool of established talent. When they embrace the importance of the mature generations in their workforce strategy, then and only then, will they lead teams into a time when American businesses and workers will continue to thrive.
If American leaders are ready enough soon enough, we can continue our tradition of inventiveness and hard work from our time as a young emerging nation into the revolutionary age of the knowledge worker in a rapidly developing world. Given the pending labor and knowledge shortages coupled with the ever increasing demand for inventiveness, for innovation, rapid response times and cost competitiveness, there's a strong case for recruiting and retaining skilled mature workers and integrating workers from all generations into a flexible business model.
Prosperity, success, invention and innovation are not birthrights. They are the rewards to the bold and prepared few. The new century demands that leaders have courage, imagination, intuition, inspiration, attitude − and the ability to "execute." These heroic qualities are epitomized by bold leaders with a courageous vision, supported by timely resources, hard data and endowed with the drive to succeed.
Return of the Boomers is a critical competitive weapon in the exceptional leader's arsenal of tools to promote personal, professional and societal success.
The book concludes with a call for "leader heroes - the risk takers, the people who put the interests of others before themselves, the people who recognize reality and live by the truth, and who dare to act and act daringly, even when they act alone.
